Commonties, the youth network of the Commonwealth Secretariat hosted an event for young people to explore opportunities to be more involved in the wider community of the Commonwealth. A number of affiliated organizations, associations and charities were present including the Royal Commonwealth and Commonwealth Scholarships Association.
The fair was followed by an inspiring Keynote speech by Mr. Geoff Thompson, who is a former world champion athlete and one of the country's most respected sports administrators and youth activists. He highlighted the importance of how education, sport and art can play in improving the lives of young people. Shortly after the talk was a panel discussion focusing on thematic areas of creating a more sustainable, fair, secure and prosperous future. The panelists were as follows:
- Representing A more sustainable future- Cat Leggat, UK Youth Climate Coalition
- Representing A fairer future- Vijay Krishnarayan, Commonwealth Foundation
- Representing A more secure future- Tiffany Daniels, Youth Development Practitioner
- Representing A more prosperous future- Arif Zaman, FRSA Executive Director, Commonwealth Businesswomen’s Network
Overall, both the talk and the panel discussion set the tone for the CHOGM 2018 with a focus on how the commonwealth offers young future leaders a chance to connect, engage and contribute to the issues that matter most to them.
